Permanent eyeliner: six styles and one eye shape

The right permanent eyeliner style follows the shape of the eye rather than a trend: an ascending line lifted by about 10 to 15 degrees opens a downturned outer corner, a full line under the lower lash rim can make the eye look 1 to 2 millimetres narrower, and on a deep set or hooded lid anything wider than 2 to 3 millimetres can disappear the moment the eye opens. As permanent make-up, eyeliner usually lasts 2 to 3 years and heals in 5 to 10 days, and because it sits within about a millimetre of the tear film, technique and hygiene matter here more than on any other part of the face.

Six styles, from softest to boldest

Lash line enhancement places pigment directly between the lash roots rather than as a line, so it reads as a denser lash base with a visible width under 1 millimetre. The thin liner follows the lash line at an even 1 to 2 millimetres from inner to outer corner, the most literal reading of a classic liquid line. The ascending liner keeps that same 1 to 2 millimetres at the inner corner but widens to 3 to 4 millimetres at the outer third, angled upward by roughly 10 to 15 degrees. The extended wing takes that angle and continues it 3 to 6 millimetres past the natural corner of the eye, the most graphic of the four line styles.

The soft shadow liner blurs a similar 2 to 3 millimetre band into a diffused edge rather than a hard line, so it reads as a shadow rather than a shape. The double liner adds a second, 1 to 2 millimetre line under the lower lash margin to whichever upper line you choose, and of the six it is the boldest and the one most likely to make the eye look smaller. That order, from lash enhancement to double liner, is roughly the order from most subtle to most noticeable.

Matching the line to your eye shape

A deep set or hooded eye is the shape most likely to hide a line: when the crease sits low, anything wider than 2 to 3 millimetres can vanish once the eye is open, which is why lash line enhancement and the soft shadow liner read better here than a hard 3 to 4 millimetre edge. A downturned outer corner benefits from the ascending liner's 10 to 15 degree lift, which works against the droop instead of following it. A round eye reads longer with an extended wing added 3 to 6 millimetres past the corner, while the same wing on an already narrow eye tends to close it further, so a thin 1 to 2 millimetre liner or lash enhancement suits it better.

A large, open eye is the one shape that can carry the double liner without looking overdone, since there is more surface for a second 1 to 2 millimetre line to sit on. The most common mistake sits on the lower lid: a full line along the entire lower lash margin narrows the eye and reads as tired rather than defined. Limiting the lower line to the outer third of the lash margin keeps the lifting effect of the upper line intact.

How long it lasts and why it heals fast

Eyeliner is usually the most durable pigment on the face, holding for 2 to 3 years against 1 to 3 years for eyebrows and 1 to 2 years for lip colour, because eyelid skin carries little blood flow and breaks the pigment down slowly. The surface heals in 5 to 10 days, faster than the 7 to 14 days typical of brows or lips, and most of that is flaking rather than pain. For those 5 to 10 days, avoid rubbing the eye, swimming pools and saunas, since heat and moisture keep the surface soft for longer and raise the chance of losing pigment or picking up an infection right at the lash line. A touch-up after 4 to 8 weeks corrects any gaps once the healed colour has settled, usually 20 to 40 per cent lighter than on the day of the appointment.

The working distance is what changes the calculation. A 2018 case report described a pigment fleck measuring 1.5 by 0.5 millimetres that migrated into the cornea within 3 days of an eyeliner tattoo; visual acuity measured 6/7.5 in both eyes at presentation, improved to 6/6 within 16 days, and the deposit had fully resolved by 6 weeks with no lasting damage in that case. A 2019 review of documented eyelid tattoo complications lists 9 cases, 5 of them allergic granulomatous reactions, plus one case each of conjunctivitis, corneal inflammation, pigment reaching the limbus and pigment breaching the eyelid. Reduced tear film stability and meibomian gland changes have also been reported after eyeliner tattooing, one reason a patch test and a practitioner who works precisely along the lash line both matter.

Why working this close to the eye changes the risk

If a line does not suit you, correction is more delicate here than on a brow or a lip, because there is less room to blend a fix into a wider shape. Laser removal remains the main option, typically 5 to 12 sessions at 6 to 8 week intervals, and a test spot always comes first since iron oxide pigments common in dark liner can darken rather than fade under the beam. Full clearance directly on the lash line is not guaranteed, which is one more reason to agree the exact style and width in pencil, checked with the eye both open and closed, before the first pass of the needle.

A handful of situations call for a delay rather than booking on the day. Active conjunctivitis, a stye or any other eye infection is a reason to postpone by 3 to 5 days, since a needle next to inflamed tissue raises the infection risk further. Contact lenses come out before pigment is mixed and stay out until the surface has closed, the same 5 to 10 days as the rest of the healing. Blood thinners and daily aspirin increase bruising and bleeding right at the lash line more than anywhere else on the face, so tell the studio in advance rather than stopping a prescribed medicine on your own, and if you take isotretinoin, most practitioners want 6 to 12 months to pass first, since the drug slows healing everywhere it is tried. Pregnancy is not an absolute block, but many studios still ask, and waiting until afterwards removes one variable from a result meant to hold for 2 to 3 years.

The ink itself is regulated differently depending on where you are. In the European Union, tattoo and permanent make-up inks have had to meet a REACH restriction on more than 4,000 substances since 4 January 2022, with two additional colourants, Pigment Blue 15:3 and Pigment Green 7, excluded from 4 January 2023.
