Face masks: which one for what

Face masks differ less in their active ingredient than in how tightly they seal the skin. A cream mask that stays soft for 10 to 20 minutes feeds the surface; a sheet, alginate or self-heating mask closes the skin off, raises its water content from around 10 to 20 per cent towards 50 per cent, and pushes more of whatever lies underneath into the upper layers. That seal is also the limit: in a 2024 trial with 84 volunteers, sheet masks improved hydration up to 25 minutes and caused dryness and redness beyond it, so the right mask is a question of goal, skin condition and the clock.

The seal decides more than the ingredient

The outer layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is a wall of flattened cells about 10 to 20 micrometres thick, with a water content of roughly 10 to 20 per cent and a surface temperature near 32 degrees. Anything you put on the face has to cross that wall, and occlusion changes the arithmetic. When a mask stops water evaporating, the horny layer swells. In the overview by Zhai and Maibach at the University of California, water content under an occlusive layer rose to as much as 50 per cent within 30 minutes, and skin temperature climbed from 32 towards 37 degrees. Swollen cells and warmer lipids open paths, and more of what lies under the mask reaches the living skin.

That principle explains the order of strength. A cream mask that stays soft barely seals; a clay mask seals until it dries, then stops; a sheet or hydrogel mask seals as long as it stays wet; an alginate mask sets into a rubbery, airtight film; a self-heating mask adds warmth on top of the film. Occlusion favours oil-soluble molecules such as retinol more than water-loving ones such as hyaluronic acid, which mostly sits on the surface and binds water there. So the tighter the seal, the more the ingredient list matters, including the fragrance and preservatives you would rather keep outside.

Five construction types, from soft to sealed

Cream masks are rich emulsions applied 1 to 2 millimetres thick, left for 10 to 20 minutes and wiped or rinsed away. They feed lipids and humectants into the surface, never tighten, and suit dry or mature skin and anyone who reacts to anything stronger. Clay masks work the other way round. Kaolin and bentonite absorb oil and water as they dry, which is why 5 to 10 minutes are enough and why a clay mask left until it cracks pulls water out of the skin instead of oil out of the pores.

Sheet masks are cellulose, cotton or hydrogel cut to the face and soaked in 20 to 30 millilitres of serum; the sheet seals as long as it stays moist, typically 15 to 20 minutes. Alginate masks, sometimes called rubber or peel-off masks, come as a powder from brown seaweed that is stirred with water, spread 3 to 5 millimetres thick, sets within about 5 minutes and is peeled off in one piece after 15 to 20. Under the airtight film the skin cools slightly and hydrates strongly, which is why salons lay a serum or ampoule underneath.

Thermal masks are the heaviest tool in the room. Mineral or gypsum-based formulas heat as they set, reaching about 38 to 42 degrees on the skin for 15 to 20 minutes, and warming skin from its usual 32 degrees to 40 raises blood flow in it several times over. More blood means more uptake and a glow that lasts an hour or two; it also means more redness in skin that is red already, which is why a careful therapist looks at your face before opening the tin.

Ingredient and goal

For dry skin the useful words on the label are glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, ceramides and squalane, and the useful construction types are cream and sheet. For oily or congested skin the words are kaolin, bentonite, zinc, niacinamide and salicylic acid, which EU rules cap at 2 per cent in leave-on products, and the type is clay, 5 to 10 minutes, no longer. In a 4-week study of 60 adults with oily skin, a kaolin and bentonite mask used twice a week for 5 to 10 minutes cut surface sebum by 30 per cent, closed comedones by 46 per cent and open comedones by 66 per cent, while hydration rose by 30 per cent and water loss through the skin fell by 20 per cent. A well-made clay mask does not have to dry the skin out.

For tired, dull skin the goal is circulation, so warmth and massage do more than any single active; a thermal or warm cream mask after 5 minutes of massage is the classic salon pairing. For irritated skin the goal is rest: a cooling gel or sheet mask without fragrance, alcohol or acids, for 10 to 15 minutes. Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, fully in force since 2013, every ingredient must be listed in descending order down to 1 per cent, and 26 named fragrance allergens must be declared once they exceed 0.001 per cent in a leave-on product, a list that a 2023 amendment more than tripled. How long and how often

The clearest data on timing come from a randomised split-face trial published in 2024, in which 84 healthy volunteers aged 19 to 40 wore sheet masks of 3 kinds (plain water, hyaluronan and a ferment lysate) for 5, 15, 25 or 40 minutes. Hydration and water loss rose and then fell, the small vessels dilated in step with time on the skin, and sebum went up with every mask type, most after 40 minutes. The main adverse reactions were dryness in 57 per cent and redness in 11 per cent of one 28-subject group, mostly with plain water masks worn beyond 25 minutes. The authors' conclusion is the practical rule: under 25 minutes a sheet mask hydrates and calms; beyond it the drying sheet pulls water back out.

The same logic applies to the other types. A clay mask comes off as soon as it feels tight, usually after 5 to 10 minutes; a cream mask after 10 to 20; an alginate mask after 15 to 20. Frequency follows the seal: cream and sheet masks 1 to 3 times a week, clay 1 to 2 times, thermal or alginate masks every 3 to 6 weeks as part of a treatment rather than a weekly habit. Falling asleep in a sheet mask is the commonest mistake, and 7 hours are roughly 20 times the intended dose. What the salon does differently

The mask in a professional facial is rarely a different product; it is the same idea on better-prepared skin. Cleansing, an enzyme or acid exfoliation and 5 to 10 minutes of steam or a warm compress all come before it, and on skin that is clean, freshly exfoliated and warm the same mask does far more than it would at home at 11 at night. Two questions sort a good salon from a product counter. Which type of mask will you use, and why this one for my skin today? A therapist who can name the construction and the goal works to a plan. And the second: what would you skip if my skin were red? Heat and occlusion are the 2 things a rosacea-prone face tolerates least; in a National Rosacea Society survey, hot weather triggered flares in 75 per cent of patients and sun in 81 per cent. With visible redness, rosacea, an active breakout, a peel or laser session in the last 2 weeks, or isotretinoin, say so before the mask goes on, and expect the thermal mask to stay in the cupboard. Before the mask goes on

  • Is the skin red, itchy, sunburnt or freshly peeled (within the last 14 days)? Then no heat, no acids and no sealing types today.
  • Which construction type is it, and what is the goal for this session: hydration, oil, circulation or calm?
  • How long does the label say, and is a timer running: 5 to 10 minutes for clay, 15 to 20 for sheet and alginate?
  • Have you tested a new mask on the inner forearm 24 hours earlier?
  • If your skin reacts easily, is it fragrance-free? The 26 named allergens sit at the end of the ingredient list.
  • Did you use a retinoid or an acid last night? Then skip the sealing types tonight.
